Bariatric surgery (Metabolic surgery) results in long lasting weight loss and diabetes remission. It is the best treatment option available for people suffering from severe obesity who are not able to lose weight by diet and exercise. Those people who are suffering from severe diabetes and not responding to medications, also benefit from Metabolic surgery.

Even though Bariatric/metabolic surgeries are life saving surgeries, several insurance companies were denying insurance claims so far, quoting that obesity is a cosmetic problem and that bariatric surgery is a cosmetic surgery. But obesity is not a cosmetic problem. Majority of the people suffering from obesity have the tendency to gain weight from triggering factors such as unhealthy food, lack of exercise, irregular food timings, lack of sleep and stress. If anyone have such tendency to gain weight because of eating unhealthy food, they gain weight even if they take same quantity or less quantity of food than those who don’t have tendency. 96% people with BMI above 30 kg/m2 fail to lose weight by changing food habits and doing regular exercise as body got adopted to higher weight level and it is not possible to control weight by conservative methods. For them the only option left over will be bariatric/ metabolic surgery.

By realizing this fact, selective companies have been covering insurance for a long time for bariatric/ metabolic surgeries. Examples include United Health Care, Star Health, Bajaj Allianz and New India Insurance. Now the good news is IRDAI (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India) passed guidelines saying that all insurance companies should cover bariatric/ metabolic surgeries under insurance from 1st October, 2020 onwards. Those people with BMI ≥ 35 kg/m2 with any co-morbid condition or those with BMI ≥ 40 kg/m2, even without co-morbid conditions are eligible for bariatric/ metabolic surgeries. Even though these cut off limits are based on western population and higher than the actual indications in India, this is a welcoming sign towards right path.

Any one who needs bariatric/ metabolic surgeries but were unable to undergo them because of cost constraints, can avail insurance and get these surgeries done.
