Once popular, it became outdated and numbers declined worldwide because of less efficacy and availability of better surgeries. In this surgery, the greater curve of the stomach is inverted (folded) into the stomach and sutured in order to reduce the stomach volume. As stomach capacity is reduced, patient can’t take large quantity of food at a time.
GCP is purely a restrictive procedure. It acts mainly by limiting calorie intake. Body fat is under the control of several hormones and genes. And hormonal and genetic changes after GCP are negligible.
It is easy to perform, complications are very few and hospital stay is very short (less than 1 day). Staplers are not used so cost is less.
Since there are negligible physiological and hormonal changes after GCP, weight loss and diabetes remission are inadequate. As time goes on stomach expands. Weight regain chances are very high once stomach expands.
