Severe and morbid obesity are independent risk factors for COVID-19

Severe and Morbid Obesity increases Covid 19 risk

In India, Body Mass Index (BMI) of < 23 kg/m2 is considered as Normal.

While
23 – 24.99 is Overweight
25 – 29.99 is Mild Obesity
> or = 30 is Severe Obesity

Severe obesity (BMI 30 and above) significantly increases mortality and morbidity after Covid 19 infection.

Obesity leads to disorganized and defective immune response to infections including Covid 19. Need for hospitalisation, oxygen support, ICU stay, and ventilator requirement increase if an individual is suffering from severe obesity. Risk of respiratory complications is high in these individuals. Risk is proportional to the BMI. Presence of additional comorbid conditions such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, and smoking further amplify this risk.
On the otherhand Bariatric surgery significantly reduces Covid 19 related morbidity and mortality by inducing long-lasting weight loss, long-term diabetes remission and normalizing immune response to infections.
